Despite its enduring popularity, Dragon Ball Super’s manga has encountered some challenges in the past year. Its decision to adapt the franchise’s latest movie, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, into an extensive story arc has elicited mixed reactions from fans. While eagerly anticipating new content, audiences have experienced a sense of déjà vu, prompting discussions about the manga’s direction.
Super Hero’s story was triumphantly wrapped up in the manga’s landmark 100th chapter, “Burst Forth!—Light of Death!,” while the subsequent chapters have gotten a lot of mileage out of reuniting Dragon Ball’s superpowered main characters. Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 103, “A Legacy Toward the Future,” marks the climactic conclusion to Dragon Ball Super’s Super Hero Saga. However, it’s also an important period of transition for the franchise as Akira Toriyama’s final chapter before his surprising passing on March 1, 2024. Chapter 103, “A Legacy Toward the Future,” provides closure on the heightened showdown between Gohan Beast and Ultra Instinct Gohan. It’s also very true to its name in the sense that it elegantly puts a bow on Toriyama’s four decades of storytelling, while it also bravely looks forward to the unknown.
Gohan Beast & Ultra Instinct Goku Continue Their Father-Son Face-Off
Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 102, “Son Goku vs. Son Gohan,” generated a lot of excitement by putting Gohan Beast up against Ultra Instinct Goku. However, this chapter’s title proved to be slightly misleading due to how Gohan’s battle against Goten and Trunks is the main event, while Goku and Gohan’s clash only occupies the chapter’s tail end. Fortunately, Chapter 103, “A Legacy Toward the Future,” fully celebrates Gohan and Goku’s phenomenal strength. More than half of the 44-page chapter is devoted to their incredible battle and this is easily one of the manga’s most action-packed installments. Goku proudly singles out Gohan’s “intense latent potential” that came forward during their fight and it’s touching that Gohan accredits Piccolo for the majority of his growth, rather than his father.
Goku doesn’t take this news the wrong way and he’s simply happy to take on the strongest version of his son. Goku turns up the heat with his True Ultra Instinct transformation, which gives him a slight advantage over Gohan Beast and pushes his son to scramble. Gohan struggles to land any punches on Goku, while Vegeta is quick to account Goku’s edge to the fact that he’s undergone significantly more training and experience than Gohan, despite the raw power of Beast mode. Fortunately, this battle doesn’t stay one-sided and Gohan is able to appropriately match everything that Goku throws at him. Gohan pushes his Beast Mode to the next level, which once again gives him the upper hand against his father.
This surge of power gets Vegeta’s attention, but it also shocks and impresses Broly, Beerus, and Whis, which is a major milestone for this Saiyan who’s been dismissed for years. The direction that Toriyama takes this story is deeply entertaining and it’s effectively complemented by Toyotarou’s passionate artwork. Goku and Gohan have never looked better than they do here while they’re locked in dedicated combat with each other. The frames are busy with not only copious action, but exaggerated auras that crackle with energy and electricity. There’s a palpable intensity to every punch and kick that Goku and Gohan deliver. It’s no coincidence that this fight nearly destroys Beerus’ Planet, yet the two never have to resort to energy blasts. It’s a clash that’s purely made up of physical blows. One of Gohan Beast’s punches still carries enough power to completely knock Goku out of his Ultra Instinct state.
Gohan Shines A Light On The Ways Of Beast Mode
Gohan’s heightened Beast Mode puts Goku on the defensive and Chapter 103, “A Legacy Toward the Future,” finally shares some helpful information regarding this mysterious new transformation. Gohan explains that Beast Mode functions by him boosting his ki to a breaking point where he feels like he’s on the verge of “snapping,” albeit still in control. This allows him to reach the absolute height of power, but without going too far and becoming unstable. Curiously, this Beast Mode definition might be Dragon Ball Super’s attempt at teasing a potential berserker Gohan in the future.
If Gohan accesses this power by broaching the precipice of snapping, then perhaps there will be an occasion where he’s forced to surpass this limit and actually lose control if the opponent is dangerous enough. A reckless version of Gohan, much like Broly in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, would be a welcome change of pace for the heroes. For now, at least, Gohan keeps his emotions and powers in check. Another enlightening moment in Chapter 103, “A Legacy Toward the Future,” involves Beerus and Whis’ assessment of Gohan’s strength and transformation. These two are now well-acquainted with Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego, but Gohan Beast is as fresh to them as it is to everyone else.
Whis clarifies to Beerus that Gohan’s Beast mode isn’t a form of Super Saiyan or a divine transformation, but rather a “singular talent” that’s specific to Gohan. This implies that Beast Mode isn’t something that every character will go on to achieve and that it’s actually a unique synthesis of everything that Gohan represents. Chapter 103 also addresses Gohan’s likelihood of becoming a God of Destruction, a position for which Goku and Vegeta have previously been considered to be candidates. Gohan’s strength may now trump that of Goku, but Beerus shoots down Gohan’s God of Destruction candidacy because he views him as being too “straitlaced” for such a position. Whis concurs with Beerus’ assessment, which may be true, but it’s unfortunate that Dragon Ball Super may not pursue this rewarding storyline.
Gohan Beast Gets To Try His Hand Against A Legendary Super Saiyan
The battle between Gohan Beast and True Ultra Instinct doesn’t reach a proper conclusion. There may not be a true winner here, but Goku prematurely ends the battle after he feels that his skirmish with his son has taught him all that’s necessary. Goku clarifies that he didn’t engage in this battle because he wanted to beat Gohan, but rather to properly determine how strong his son has become. Goku leaves thoroughly impressed with Gohan and officially views his son as his equal, if not even stronger. He knows that Gohan will be able to confidently defend the planet once he’s gone. All that matters is that the Earth is safe and that it has someone to protect it. It’s irrelevant who that specific individual happens to be.
At this point, Dragon Ball fans should be content with this considerable Goku and Gohan showcase. However, Chapter 103 goes above and beyond here when Goku calls in Broly to also test Gohan’s strength and have a crack at Beast Mode power. Gohan Beast also proves to be superior to Broly, but it’s an enlightening experience for everyone involved. This powerful clash still happens to improve Broly’s skills and helps him gain control of his own Super Saiyan transformations. Broly is one of Dragon Ball Super’s strongest characters, but this pairing is predicated on the fact that Goku identifies similar principles between the Legendary Super Saiyan and his son.
It’s quite satisfying to see Goku embrace his role as a mentor, rather than purely functioning as a martial artist. He wants to help Broly and Gohan both grow to be their best selves and understands the best ways to bring about these changes. Broly’s excitement over his brief battle against Gohan could also be foreshadowing that he’ll eventually tap into Beast Mode too – or a comparable rage-based transformation – that’s built upon the same principles. There was earlier speculation that Broly’s time with Vegeta might mean that Ultra Ego is in his future, but Dragon Ball Super’s latest developments now indicate that Broly Beast is more likely.
The Ultimate Saiyan Showdown Breaks Out On Beerus’ Planet
Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 103, “A Legacy Toward the Future,” gives Dragon Ball Super fans everything that they could ask for between Gohan Beast’s battle against both True Ultra Instinct Goku and Broly. However, the chapter’s final act feels like the perfect gift to the long-time fans who have patiently waited to see who is the series’ strongest. Vegeta exhibits jealousy over not getting the chance to face the power of Beast Mode, so he also jumps into the fray and tests Gohan’s strength. Additionally, Goten and Trunks take on Broly and a legendary Super Saiyan free-for-all breaks out between the world’s strongest Saiyans.
It’s a truly inspirational finale to these feats of strength, all of which is only made better by Gohan’s earnest incredulity over how he’s suddenly become the strongest and everyone’s top target. It’s a promotion that’s completely lacking in ego or hubris, which is what Gohan has always represented. It’s a touching conclusion that hits even harder with the knowledge that it’s the last Dragon Ball chapter that Toriyama got to influence. It’s a true love letter to the characters that just celebrates everyone instead of arbitrarily putting up walls and making these characters wait to face each other. The only thing that’s missing is an appearance from Orange Piccolo.
A Sweet Epilogue Closes The Chapter On An Emotional, Heartfelt Note
Superpowered combat consumes the first 35 pages of Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 103, which allows the final nine pages to deliver a sweet, sentimental epilogue that’s the perfect way to conclude the manga’s Super Hero Saga. Goku, Gohan, and Piccolo all go to pick up Pan from school, which results in some extremely silly comedy. Pan tests her skills against Goku and works out her aggression, even without her finding out that he’s somehow forgotten his granddaughter’s name. It’s satisfying to see Pan showcase her skills here, but it’s also a strong way to lead into Goku training his granddaughter during Dragon Ball Z’s Peaceful World Saga, which is only a few months away in the series’ timeline.
These final pages also effectively disband the Red Ribbon Army as Carmine and Soldier #15 call it quits on world domination. Their submission here feels a little too convenient and like Dragon Ball Super just wants to wrap up any loose ends and move past this lingering storyline. However, it’s a pivot that still comes across as authentic to these characters and it’s a better alternative than periodic Red Ribbon Army attacks looming over the heroes in any future storylines. The combat in Chapter 103 is sublime, but not enough can be said regarding the cathartic final panels that conclude this chapter, the Super Hero Saga, and Toriyama’s tenure on the series.
These humble frames of heroes congregating with their family and enjoying life’s simple pleasures are reminiscent of Dragon Ball Z’s Peaceful World Saga epilogue and the solitude and serenity that everyone has reached. It’s all-too fitting that Toriyama’s final Dragon Ball chapter concludes with his heroes at peace, among their friends and family. There’s a beautiful moment where Piccolo waves goodbye to Pan’s teacher, but it’s almost as if Akira Toriyama himself has reached through the pages of the manga to say farewell to his beloved readers and fans. “A Legacy Toward the Future,” indeed.
